Join TREWO as we celebrate World Health Day! This years health focus selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) is High Blood Pressure.

Also known as Hypertension, high blood pressure has its risk factors that perhaps one cannot control such as age, ethnicity, gender and family history, but what TREWO would like to focus on are the factors that you CAN control. If we all take a moment to recognize that by 30 minutes or more of walking, jogging, dancing or playing a sport you enjoy 3-4 times a week, weight loss, reducing alcohol consumption and salt intake, eliminating smoking, reducing stress, and selecting delicious yet better food choices, hypertension IS TREATABLE and most importantly PREVENTABLE!!

Hypertension has been shown to affect males and females from ages 20 and older and increases your risk of coronary heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and diabetes. Did you know that increasing fibre in your diet can decrease your risk of coronary heart disease? To learn more about fibre please read Fabulous Fibre.

Join TREWO and incorporate better food and lifestyle choices into your life! Our goal is to empower with knowledge as we build healthier communities! Join us in our efforts to reduce heart attack and stroke.

Presentation of cheque to CAMH

Our second annual fund-raiser was organized to raise money for CAMH to assist with serious mental health and addiction problems within the South Asian community, provide assistance to the Roofs for the Roofless project in India, and develop the TREWO site, with the objective of making it the premier go-to website for medical information and assistance. The Ball was attended by close to 450 people and we raised a meaningful amount to assist with the above-mentioned goals.

Roofs for the Roofless is a secular Non-Government Organisation (NGO) registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act and the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act.

Roofs runs comprehensive rural development projects in 18 villages south of Chennai in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, building healthy, vibrant, economically sustainable rural communities. Roofs work is organized through seven programs based on community development principles that form its overarching program. The programs are, Education, Health, Women's Empowerment, Child and Youth Rights, Aged Care and Veterinary Care. These programs are based in the belief that impoverished rural communities can transform themselves if they are empowered with proven practical interventions. Roofs believes that the poor are not only those with the lowest socio-economic status but also those deprived of services like health, education, employment, housing, safe drinking water and other aspects of human well being.

The TREWO Second Annual Health Mela was held on March 26th, 2011 at the Pearson Centre.

Health Issues continue to be the top priority for all Canadians in every poll conducted year after year. Issues around the ageing population, access to health care, mental health issues, disease prevention and screening, crowded ERs and hospitals, lack of medical care and caregivers are common themes that emerge. TREWO is doing its bit to address many of these issues at their second annual Health Mela.

The Mela will feature outstanding speakers who will bring current information on heart disease, diabetes, drinking and driving, mental health issues among youth and women's health with specific attention to osteoporosis and bone health. Attendees can view cooking demos and participate in fun ways to exercise through dance, yoga and innovative movement. Several agencies will display their products to promote healthy lifestyles and children will be given special attention as young learners being introduced to healthy ways of living.  TREWO has been working hard with a group of dedicated volunteers to ensure the highest quality of information is given out in creative and innovative ways.

One of TREWO's main objectives is to help communities at risk - seniors and youth being special areas of interest and concentration. To this end, we have developed a highly informative website (www.trewo.org) to provide the community with updated health information – articles, recipes, videos, links and tips for healthy living.  We strongly believe in partnering with NGOs, foundations, public and private health companies in creating an important network for enhanced health education and promotion rather than re-inventing the wheel. One example of this is our outreach to overseas projects such as South India's ROOFS FOR THE ROOFLESS. We will soon expanding our mission to the most needy and vulnerable populations by working with several outstanding organizations.

Supporting our objective of educating Canadians on health issues, we are confident that the Mela's attendees will be empowered and motivated with new information which they can apply in practical and realistic ways to their daily lives. This is indeed a great learning opportunity to embrace the essentials of health. Through dialogue and other experiences, attendees will discover the many possibilities that exist for the human body, mind and spirit in achieving extraordinary levels of health and wellness.  TREWO invites the community at large to join us in helping people lead healthier lifestyles, decrease morbidity and mortality from preventable illness, prevent addictions and accidents and motivate young people to become leaders and future role models in a healthy, peaceful and vibrant world.
